File naming convention for Our-Hometown.com
News Conversion of Microsoft Word files

This document describes the file naming convention for Microsoft Word documents, .JPG picture files and .TXT caption files sent to Our-Hometown.com for publication in your Internet Newspaper.

Folders

Organize your story files in folders whose name reflects the "button" you want the stories to appear in. For example, you might have folders named "Front_Page", "Community", "School", "Editorials", etc. Note: do not use spaces in the folder names. Note: the "_" character in a folder name will result in a blank in the heading on the index page for the folder.

Story Filenames

You can name your story files anything you want but the order the stories appear on the index page linked to the "button" is alphabetic by filename. For Example, the story "Apple_Harvest_Largest_Ever.doc" will appear before "Zebra_Escapes_From_Zoo.doc" in the index page. You can use this fact to control the order stories appear in the index. Most publishers simply use numbers in the filename to control the order. For example: 01.doc appears before 02.doc. Note: do not use spaces in file names.

Pictures

Pictures are sent in .JPG files whose name matches the story you want them to appear in with the addition of the letter "p" and the number of the picture. For example, to have a picture in the story "01.doc" you would send "01p1.jpg", a second picture would be sent in "01p2.jpg"

Captions

If a picture is to have a caption, the text for it is sent in a .TXT file with the same name as the picture with the addition of "_cpt". For example, to have a caption on the picture "01p1.jpg" you would send "01p1_cpt.txt". Note:.TXT files can be created with Microsoft Word with the FILE pull down by selecting "Save As" and scrolling in "Text Only (*.txt)" in the "Save As Type" field.

Pictures without a story

A story is required for every picture. If you have a picture with or without a caption but there is no story you should make a short story up that can contain as little as a headline.

Compression

Use Winzip on the PC or Stuff It on MAC to gather all the files into one and compress them.
