Our Hometown Announces SmartScroll Newspaper Technology
Paul Kozma, Our Hometown CEO, explains “While infinite scrolling has existed for some time, to be valuable to readers, it has to be easy to use without being frustrating. We’ve taken this great idea and made it user-friendly so people can explore content and never lose their spot, which encourages more reading of archived newspaper content.”
With SmartScroll, once a reader finishes an article, if they click on the back button or category link, they return to the last spot they stopped scrolling at, which allows them to continue scrolling back in time. They can return to that category at any time during their site visit and will still be returned to that spot, eliminating the need to re-find where they last stopped scrolling. This eliminates what usually makes infinite scrolling so annoying to the average user.
Publishers can customize their readers’ SmartScroll experience with a number of options. They can limit the number of editions a reader can scroll back through which means a reader can still reach the bottom of the page where important footer data exists, or restrict certain time periods of data to paid subscribers only. They can also choose to have categories pages start at the most recent newspaper edition or start at the articles from an archived edition readers may be looking at.
In addition to Our Hometown’s standard reporting, publishers receive additional data about the average, maximum, and minimum number of pages of articles readers scroll through in each category.
