An often overlooked item on the admin dashboard is the Screen Options tab that appears at the top right of several pages. It allows the user to toggle the visibility of individual items in the interface. For instance you may want to hide unused columns in a table listing or infrequently used panels in the Article editor. Let’s take a look at where the Screen Options are available and what they affect. This is a great way to tailor and declutter the interface to your liking.

The description provided in the panel is as follows:

Screen elements

Some screen elements can be shown or hidden by using the checkboxes. They can be expanded and collapsed by clicking on their headings, and arranged by dragging their headings or by clicking on the up and down arrows.

The screen options tab is available on various pages of the admin dashboard, such as the:

  • Home view when you first load the Dashboard: Screen Options provides visibility toggles for various informational panels provided by the platform and third party plugins, such as visitor metrics, revenue, customer support information, etc.

List-Style Pages

Instead of widget panels on the dashboard homepage, on other pages such as plugin interfaces using a table-based layout, the screen options tab provides toggles for Columns visibility. Also note the Screen Options are affected when the Page Optimization is active or not.

The pages where you will encounter this most often are the:

  • Listing pages for (All) Articles, PDFs, Categories, Tags, Pages, Users
  • Memberpress pages (such as Members, Transactions, etc.)

Article (Classic) Editor

Similar to the Dashboard page, the Classic Article Editor also provides toggles for panel (widget) visibility as well as interface layouts in the Screen Options panel.

Article Editor (Block)

The Article Block Editor uses its own panel interface separately from the Classic Editor and doesn’t use the same Screen Options panel.

We hope this has been a helpful refresher on how to manage the Dashboard interface via the Screen Options panel. If you have any questions please reach out to us at ops@our-hometown.com.
