Facebook Adds No Restrictions to Ad Targeting
Last week, Facebook unveiled its updated advertising policy, which puts the burden on the user to opt out of highly targeted political advertisements on the platform.
Facebook’s director of product management for ads commented in a blog post:
“There has been much debate in recent months about political advertising online and the different approaches that companies have chosen to take. While Twitter has chosen to block political ads and Google has chosen to limit the targeting of political ads, we are choosing to expand transparency and give more controls to people when it comes to political ads”
They are offering tools to edit your profile settings to remove yourself from campaigns and filter out political ads, but that responsibility is deferred completely to the user. The default is to see every ad targeted to your demographic.
