Our-Hometown’s upcoming Virtual Conference on Rethinking Paywalls for FREE Print Newspapers will take place on Friday, September 4th at 12PM EST.

Have you ever had a print subscriber call to cancel their free print subscription because they “get all the news for free online anyway?” This has become a common trend for publishers as their print audience continues to migrate online at the expense of the paper’s print advertising reach and revenue.

In this session, Our-Hometown CEO Matt Larson will review a case study from a group of free print newspapers that successfully launched a Metered Paywall on their websites in 2018.

They had two objectives driving this change: Stop the cannibalization of print advertising “dollars” and develop a digital revenue model that was not dependent on digital advertising “dimes” (or worse yet, mobile “pennies”). Since then, they have continued to drive digital subscription growth with gift subscriptions, limited-time coupons, and targeted email marketing.

Matt will also discuss the wide range of soft paywall models that are available on WordPress and most CMS platforms today, including a free “registration wall”, which is an increasingly popular option that allows free papers to establish a direct channel of communication with their online audience: The Email Newsletter.
